The Role of Strategic Communication in Successful Establishment of Urban Nature-based Solutions
This publication explores how strategic communication determines the success and long-term sustainability of urban nature-based solutions. It presents urban NBS as socio-ecological transformations rather than purely technical projects, and explains how structured, long-term communication with stakeholders supports awareness, co-design, implementation, and stewardship. The document highlights five key dimensions of effective communication for NBS – participatory co-design, cultural contextualization, visualization of impacts, articulation of human–nature interdependence, and long-term stakeholder engagement – and introduces the “communication continuum” from awareness to stewardship. It is especially relevant for municipalities, communicators and practitioners working on urban NBS, climate adaptation, green and blue infrastructure, and socially inclusive urban planning in the Western Balkans and beyond.
